Learn Circus Arts in Nanaimo
Juggling, poi, diabolo, hula-hoops, spinning plates and more!
Why Circus Arts?
Circus arts are a playful way to develop coordination, concentration, balance and confidence while learning new skills. I focus primarily on object manipulation skills such as juggling, poi and hula hooping.
Circus arts can be enjoyed by children and adults and offer a creative, non-competitive way to move, learn and play. They also encourage patience and persistence — because every new skill develops one step at a time.
Experience Teaching Circus Arts
Over the years, I have taught circus arts programs for children, including after-school programs in elementary schools. These programs used juggling, poi, hula hooping, balance skills and games to encourage creativity, coordination, cooperation and confidence through play.
While I no longer offer regular after-school programs, this experience helped shape the Circus Arts workshops and training programs I offer today.
Poi
Poi combines rhythm, coordination and flowing movement as you learn to spin and create different patterns. It can be practiced with a variety of equipment and adapted from beginner skills to more complex combinations.
Learning poi is a fun way to challenge coordination, explore creative movement and develop new movement skills.
Juggling
Juggling is fun. You get to play and exercise at the same time. It can improve eye-hand coordination, reflexes, and self-confidence. Studies show that people who learn to juggle increase their grey matter! Anyone can learn to juggle. Some people will find they can juggle with a couple of hours of practice. Others might need a little more time, but practice and persistence is the key to learning any new skill. We juggle with different tools: balls, clubs, knives, and rings.
Hula Hoop
Hooping exercises more than 30 core muscles, improves balance, flexibility, dexterity and coordination, and tones and reshapes the abdomen, buttocks and legs. It’s a low-impact exercise appropriate for people of all ages.
